Gold steals the spotlight, but silver sleeps in far more Quebec drawers: family flatware, trays, jewellery, coins. Before selling, you need to understand how the silver price in Canada is read — because the traps are even more numerous than with gold.
Like gold, silver trades continuously on world markets, quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.103 grams), then converted to Canadian dollars. Its price per gram is much lower than gold's — but silver objects are often far heavier than gold jewellery, which compensates: a sterling flatware set can weigh several kilos.
The quoted rate refers to pure silver (.999). Yet almost everything you own is sterling .925 — an alloy containing 92.5% silver. The metal value of one gram of sterling = pure silver price per gram × 0.925. A tray marked "EPNS" or "Silver Plated", on the other hand, is only plated: its metal value is negligible, whatever the market rate.
Markets follow the gold/silver ratio — how many ounces of silver per ounce of gold. Historically this ratio swings widely, and some see in it moments when silver is "lagging" gold. We make no predictions: simply remember that the silver price moves daily, often more sharply than gold, and that an evaluation is always done at the rate of the moment.
Two practical consequences. First, weight dominates: a few grams' difference changes little, but a complete set plays out in kilos — insist on weighing done in front of you. Second, this is the category with the biggest gaps between buyers: some large chains pay only about half the metal value for silverware. Comparing two offers can literally double your amount — see our comparison with the big chains.
Our homepage displays the silver rate in CAD per gram, ounce and kilo, and the calculator handles .925 sterling silver.
