Whether they come from an investment, an inheritance or a forgotten drawer, gold coins sell very well — provided you know which category they belong to. Because not all coins are equal, even at the same weight.
Bullion coins are struck in large quantities to contain a guaranteed amount of gold: the Canadian Maple Leaf, the South African Krugerrand, the American Eagle, the Vienna Philharmonic. Their value essentially follows the gold price, and their certified purity makes evaluation straightforward.
These recognized coins generally fetch the market's best rates, because they are easy to authenticate and resell. This is the simplest category to sell.
Some coins are worth more than their metal content: rarity, a particular year, limited mintage, exceptional condition, collector demand. An old British sovereign, a low-mintage commemorative or a coin in outstanding condition can interest the numismatic market.
The golden rule: never melt a coin without having it examined first. A serious evaluation starts by checking whether a coin has collector value before treating it at metal value.
In an estate, coins are often mixed together — bullion, circulation coins, tokens, medals. Do not sort them yourself too quickly, and above all do not clean them: on a collector coin, cleaning can destroy part of the value. Our guide to inherited gold details the right steps.
Each coin is identified (country, year, type), weighed and verified in front of you. Recognized coins are evaluated on their certified gold content and the current rate; potentially numismatic coins are flagged as such. You receive a detailed, coin-by-coin offer — not an unverifiable lump sum.
Bring everything that comes with your coins: certificates, original capsules and cases, purchase invoices. These make authentication easier and, for some coins, support the value. None of it is mandatory — a bare coin can be evaluated too — but it helps.
