It's the question everyone asks before selling: how much is my gold worth per gram? The answer depends on just two things: today's gold price, and the karat (purity) of your piece.
Gold trades on international markets and its price moves continuously. As of this writing (August 2026), pure gold trades around $180 CAD per gram — a historically high level. That's why any serious buyer calculates their offer at the live rate at the moment of your visit, never from a pre-set price.
Jewellery is almost never pure gold: it's an alloy. The hallmark stamped on the piece (10K, 14K, 18K, 21K, 22K or 24K — sometimes written 417, 585, 750, 875, 916 or 999) indicates the proportion of fine gold. The higher the karat, the higher the value per gram. An 18K chain is worth significantly more per gram than a 10K ring of the same weight.
Take a 20-gram 14K chain. Its value is today's rate multiplied by the gold content of 14K, multiplied by the weight. At our rates, that's roughly $1,900 today. You can get your own estimate in 10 seconds with our online calculator, updated in real time with the market.
Two buyers looking at the same piece on the same day can offer very different amounts. The difference is the margin each one keeps. The big chains keep a significant share of the metal value; at On Achète Or, selling directly to the refinery with no middleman lets us pay out a much higher share — and we beat any written competitor offer, guaranteed.
An online estimate gives you a ballpark, but only a physical evaluation — precise weighing and professional purity testing, done in front of you — gives the exact number. With us, that evaluation is free, no obligation, and payment is immediate if you accept the offer.
